Brown Bear Bay

Our Premise

For nearly two decades, visionary conservationist Richard Hojohn observed life unfold in Chinitna Bay from within his iconic Yurt which marks the western-most human-made structure in this bearadise.

Richard's core belief has always been that we should not inconvenience the bears so that we may enjoy them

This value guides our every decision as we work to steward this bearadise; where people can experience the willingness of wildlife to share the land with people, and learn what it takes to cultivate a culture of coexistence.

The placement and design of our Suites, Brown Bear Bay Code of Conduct, and format of our small-group multi-night fixed-departure stays allow us to sustain the magic that comes from a long history of mutual trust & respect with the wild.

Whether you have never been on a wildlife safari or know every mountain on the Bear Coast like the back of your hand, this experience is one you can invest in with the confidence that it will truly be a transformational escape to the wilderness.

Brown Bear Bay

As Seen on TV

Bears in Alaska

Filmed June 29 - July 30, 2024

Using camera traps, drones, GoPros, and his RED digital cinema camera, Jake captures the intimate story of the season’s only mother with spring cubs during the 2024 Salmon Run. Filmed entirely by the man behind the camera for Apple TV's Brown Bear Episode, the result is a cinematic, one-man documentary born of patience, trust-building, and countless hours in the private wilderness of Brown Bear Bay.

Jake Davis TV, Episode 3

Brown Bear

Filmed June 2021 & 2022

Brown Bear Bay is featured in this epic episode on the hard work that goes into surviving unforgiving seasons in the mountain ranges of North America. Though Bears, Bison, and Moose are the some of the largest beasts on our continent, life isn't easy. Enjoy this 27-minute episode, and keep an eye out for familiar faces, trees, and landscapes.

Year of the C.O.Y.

"Cubs of the Year". They start out no taller than a gull, and nearly double in size at the end of a good season.

2025 saw record-breaking salmon numbers starting in mid-June, lasting well until late September. We saw an unprecedented increase in females seeking out mates, and were delighted to see them all gain significant weight such that we expect most of them to carry cubs to be born spring 2026.

Summer 2027 - Booking Soon

Year of the Yearling

"Yearlings" are cubs who are entering their second summer, having just celebrated their 1-year birthday. We hope a great number of cubs from the 2026 COY boom survive into 2027, and look forward to seeing these cubs gain confidence around each other, and in the bay as they watch closely to learn how to forage and fish from their dutiful mothers.
